Editorial, Opinion Piece Discuss Issues Related To Routine HIV Testing
A recent directive to streamline the HIV testing consent process in Massachusetts as well as consent forms "no longer hav[ing] to accompany test specimens to the lab," are bringing "the state closer to a CDC recommendation that clinicians provide HIV screening on an opt-out basis," according to a Boston Globe editorial. "The opt-out provision is at the heart" of legislation sponsored by state Sen. Patricia Jehlen (D) that would end the state"s requirement of written consent for HIV testing "and instead have healthcare providers inform patients verbally that the test is planned but that they can decline it," the editorial states, adding, "The Jehlen bill would help destigmatize HIV testing itself" (7/6).

The study found that ultrasound-guided nonsurgical therapy significantly reduces pain from calcific tendonitis of the rotator cuff and restores lasting mobility after treatment.

Sylvester Breast Cancer Researchers Win Prestigious Department Of Defense Grant To Expand Study Of African-American Women
Breast cancer researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have been awarded a prestigious Department of Defense Synergistic Idea Award, one of just 12 such grants in the United States. The $725,000 research grant over two years will allow Lisa Baumbach, Ph.D., associate professor of pediatrics at the Miller School, and Mark Pegram, M.D., professor of medicine and associate director for clinical and translational research at the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at Sylvester, to expand their work examining the genetic differences found in African-American breast cancer patients.

General Opitcal Council Consults On 2010-2015 Strategy, UK

The General Optical Council (GOC) has launched an open consultation on its five-year strategy. Registrants, patients and the public, and partner organisations are encouraged to have their say on the GOC"s role and work priorities for 2010-2015. Feedback is invited on a range of issues including: - What should the GOC"s role be in relation to patients? - How should the GOC work with other organisations to protect the public? - How do the public know that optical professionals are doing a good job? - How should the GOC support registrants who raise concerns? GOC Chair, Geoff Harris said: "Now that the newly-formed Council has taken up office, we are taking the first crucial steps toward setting our agenda for the next five years. We need to ensure the GOC"s role and work priorities remain relevant and proportionate in the future. To help us achieve this, we are encouraging both the public and the optical professions to get involved from the outset." The responses will be used when formulating a draft five-year strategic plan. A further consultation on the draft plan will follow in November, with the final strategy launching in April 2010. Partner organisations including patient groups, eye health charities and optical bodies will also be presenting their views to the new Council over the next three months.
