Xeloda(R)-Oxaliplatin Combination (XELOX) Shown To Be More Effective Than Standard Chemotherapy Regimen In Adjuvant Colon Cancer
Genentech, Inc. announced that an international Phase III study demonstrated that oral Xeloda® plus oxaliplatin (XELOX) is superior to a commonly used intravenous chemotherapy, 5-FU/LV (infused 5-fluorouracil plus leucovorin), in increasing the time people with adjuvant colon cancer lived without their cancer returning when given immediately after surgery. The data show those who participated in the study and took XELOX immediately after surgery lived longer without their cancer being detectable than those who took intravenous 5U/LV. No new adverse events related to Xeloda were observed in the study.

The Fight Against Chagas: Time To Focus On Patients
This year, one hundred years since the discovery of Chagas disease, the medical humanitarian organisation Mç©decins Sans Frontiç¨res (MSF) is launching its campaign "Chagas: it"s time to break the silence." MSF calls on endemic countries to end neglect of Chagas sufferers and support diagnosis and treatment for affected people, rather than focusing solely on vector control. MSF also calls for further Research and Development (R&D) efforts into new drugs, rapid diagnosis tests to use in remote settings and better cure tests for one of the world"s most neglected diseases.

Navigation In Hip Resurfacing

Hip resurfacing can be a good alternative to total hip replacement (THR) in young adults because it conserves bone and it has acceptable short- to medium-term results. However, there have been concerns about fractures of the femoral neck with this procedure, partly due to notching and varus alignment during implantation. Therefore, in this study the author"s used imageless computer navigation as a method to aid in the placement of the femoral component in hip resurfacings. Pre-operative templating was used to determine the planned stem-shaft angle against the native neck-shaft angle. Post-operatively, this template was then assessed using digital anteroposterior unilateral radiographs of the hip. There were no instances of notching of the femoral neck or varus alignment of the implant. The stem-shaft angle differed from that planned by 2.8° and while "a learning curve was observed in the time taken for navigation" this was not true for accurate placement of the implant." The author"s conclude that "computer navigation for placement of the initial guidewire in hip resurfacing has been shown to be more accurate than the use of conventional mechanical jigs" and that it "shows promise in optimising the preparation of the femoral head" and in helping to reduce factors that can cause the femoral neck to fracture and the implant to fail.
